Happy Halloween weekend, SU’ers! It’s one of our favorite times of the year. A time when we all get to dress up as goblins, ghouls, and out-dated movie characters. When we get to take our kids trick-or-treating, and houses all around now look like haunted houses filled with candy. While Halloween might be a bit different for all of us this year (thanks, Coronavirus), we know that there are still going to be plenty of people celebrating. So to make sure you have the best Halloween and don’t wake up from nightmares of blowing your macros, here are 4 quick-hitting tips to stay on track and still enjoy yourself this Halloween!
1. Prioritize protein early in the day
Prioritizing protein early in the day doesn’t mean slamming protein shakes every hour. Not at all! This is just a simple way to keep yourself from feeling starving later on in the day. Protein is the most filling macronutrient we eat. This helps out a ton when we have a big event or weekend, like Halloween, where candy shows up to tempt us at every turn.
2. Total calories > your macros
Pressuring yourself to be perfect on Halloween is any easy way to send you over the edge. We call this the perfection trap. When you draw hard lines, one off-plan choice can send you spiraling. Instead, get ahead of temptation by being mindful of your total calories instead of aiming for perfect macros. Sure, your numbers might look a little bit different, but your weight will remain stable. And most importantly, you’ll enjoy yourself while sticking to a plan that keeps you on track and without guilt.
3. Pick & plan some of your favorites
Love Reeses? So do we! What about Snickers? That’s one of our favorites! Remember, the whole idea of Stronger U is that we can eat anything we want, just not everything. If you’re looking forward to indulging in some candy this weekend, take some time to think about what you want and prioritize accordingly. Plug your candy choices into MyFitnessPal and then build your day around that with calories > macros in mind. This way you get to indulge in your favorites without the guilt!
4. It’s just one day!
We all tend to get caught up in the idea that an off day will undo all of our hard work and progress. That’s especially true after a holiday like Halloween when we wake up and see the scale reading a few pounds higher than we like. In reality, that couldn’t be further from the truth. None of us gained all of our weight in just one day. It was an accumulation of months, or even years, that were spent overeating. One day of overeating is hardly a blip on the radar when you think about it. So if you see the scale creep up after this weekend, don’t let those old feelings of defeat creep in. Remind yourself that Halloween is just one day. You can get right back to the habits and choices that serve you the very next day.
5. Get the candy out of the house
Indulging and going a little off plan on Halloween? Totally cool. Keeping that going until the candy runs out? Not so cool. Take the leftover cauldron of candy and donate it to your local firehouse or Treats for Troops.
